AHTD suspends some projects due to uncertainty in funding

AHTD suspends some projects due to uncertainty in funding

LITTLE ROCK (AHTD) – The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has withdrawn ten construction projects from its planned list of projects scheduled for award in April as a result of the uncertainty of Federal-aid reimbursements available from the Federal Highway Trust Fund.

The United State Department of Transportation has projected that the Federal Highway Trust Fund will run short of funds as early as July of this year without Congressional action.  Because of this uncertainty, the AHTD has evaluated State and Federal funding that will be available and reduced the number of construction projects planned because of the possible inability of the Federal Highway Trust Fund to provide timely and full reimbursements to Arkansas.

The ten Federal-aid projects that have been pulled from the Department’s April bid letting total approximately $60 million and include:

Legislators convene to discuss I-40 and I-55 mess

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Legislators convened at the Capitol Tuesday to discuss the highway debacle that had I-40 and I-55 backed up for more than twenty hours.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department attended the meeting to see what could have been improved and what can still be done to prevent stalls like these in the future.

"I don't know if there was anything that was within our control that we didn't do," said AHTD director Scott Bennett in an interview.

The highway department says it followed pre-treatment procedures prior to the ice storm that dumped up to six inches of sleet in eastern parts of the state. Still, the discussion at the Capitol revolved around funding.

"One of the things we hear all the time is Missouri did this, Missouri did that. Missouri has four times the capabilities that we do. If [people] expect us to operate like Missouri, it's going to take money," continued Bennett.
