AHSCA announces 2013 All-Star basketball coaches

CONWAY, Ark. (AHSCA) - The president of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association, Scott Kelton of Blevins, announced the head basketball coaches and their staffs for the 2013 East-West Arkansas Army National Guard/Arkansas High School Coaches Association Girls and Boys All-Star teams as selected by their fellow coaches here at a press conference on the University of Central Arkansas campus.

UCA athletic director Dr. Brad Teague welcomed the members of the AHSCA, the 2013 All-Star coaches and media representatives during the morning press conference.

The head coach for the East girls will be Jay Cook of Paragould and the head coach of the East boys will be Johnny Rice of North Little Rock. The West girls head coach will be Charles Berry of Huntsville and the head coach of the West boys will be Shane Thurman of Pottsville.

Philander Smith College Hosts Gulf Coast Athletic Conference 2013 Basketball Tournament

Basketball returns to Barton Coliseum with the opening of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament featuring 8 colleges and universities including Philander Smith College as host.

Games started today with Philander as a top seed in the conference. Media passes are available at Gate 5 entrance to the State Fair Grounds or call, Shareese Kondo at 519-1556.

Helping Hand to hold 'Walk, Run or Wheel' 5K at Big Dam Bridge

Helping Hand is hosting a 5k at the Big Dam Bridge on May 11. It is called the Helping Hand "Walk, Run or Wheel" for Special Needs 5k  & 2k Fun Run.

The 5k begins at 8:30 am. The 2k fun run starts immediately after (around 9:30). Pre-register for $20 by May 6 at www.racesonline.com or register race morning one hour before race time for $28.

Come join us for our first annual community Super Bowl party.  This will be a day filled with food, fun, music, games, prizes, desserts and super fellowship. Everyone is invited so please spread the word! Shuttle Bus services will provide transportation during the day and after the game (details to follow).  The schedule for the day is as follows:

2 p.m. - Live Music/Karaoke (Snacks begin)

4 p.m. - Dinner

5:30 p.m. - Kickoff (Snacks continue)

10:30 p.m. - Close (Depending on game)

Our shuttle bus service will provide pick-up service at the Compassion Center, Salvation Army and the Union Rescur Mission.  The the shuttle bus service will start return trips as soon as the game ends and will have specific drop off points. Given time constraints, we will not be able to make custom stops or routes.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Cyclists from across the region will participate in the Sixth Annual Big Dam Bridge 100 Cycling Tour of Central Arkansas on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Crossing the longest bridge built specifically for cyclists, runners and walkers, the event is expected to draw about 2,500 riders of all ages from 25 states and throughout Arkansas.

LaHarpe Blvd. will be closed from 6 am - 8:45 am on Saturday morning, and the Big Dam Bridge and Two Rivers Bridge will both be closed to all non-event traffic from 6:30 am - 3:00 pm.
