LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Local congregations with the United Methodist Church joined with the Arkansas Rice Depot for a packing party on Saturday.

It is part of what's called "Ingathering."

The groups hope to put together 40,000 meals for hungry children and families this weekend.

Volunteers also did plenty of vegetable and rice packing as well as unpacking supplies.

They’re also looking beyond the holiday coming up next Thursday.

“Folks come from all across the state. They bring items to help alleviate hunger but also disaster clean-up. There's flood buckets and tornado buckets that people bring in,” said Bishop Gary Mueller with the United Methodist Church.

Bishop Mueller also announced the ministries and projects slated to get 30-thousand dollars in grants.
