A Place to Call Home: Sydney

The toughest to place include children aged 11 to 17. They face the biggest challenge because most prospective parents want to adopt very young children.

Through our partnership with the Arkansas Department of Human Services, we feature Sydney this week. Even though she's 13, she wants the same thing we all do: to simply be loved.

A ceramic cross and a hello kitty jewelry dish are the two picks 13-year old Sydney wants to paint. At Firefly studio in west Little Rock, it's all about the color and the technique. For Sydney, it's all something new.

"I feel kind of nervous," Sydney admitted, "because i really haven't done this before."

She's never spent a quiet afternoon painting or talking about her desire to be adopted. As we do just that this day, Sydney teenager shares with me all the things she loves like gymnastics and sports.

"I like going places, like shopping or out to eat. I love food, doesn't look like it, but I do."
What would make all of that better though, she tells me is a family to share it with. That is something she's never really had.

"I want a Christian family that will love me no matter what and that will take care of me," Sydney says.

Sydney has been in state care most of her life. She lives now in a group home, and she admits to me that as much as she wants to be adopted, the thought of it, scares her.

"It makes me nervous, thinking I'm gonna go to a home," says Sydney, "because my last adoptive home I was in, I was abused."

Abused, she says, and now alone. But her faith gets her through, which is why she chose the cross and asked me to paint it for her. The jewelry box is just for fun.

A little faith, mixed with play: the type of life she dreams of one day having. A future filled with hope.

"I think it's gonna be wonderful," she shares. "because I have God with me and God makes everything work."

Firefly's owner, out of the kindness of her heart, will fire those two pieces and give them to Sydney as a gift. We want to thank her for that.
