Update: Man with kidnapped mother starts police chase | News
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A 37-year-old man led police on a high-speed chase for about an hour Tuesday afternoon.
According to Bill Sadler with Arkansas State Police, Carlton Johnston from Saline County went to the home he shared with his mother and held her against her will. Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington said a friend of the mother's contacted deputies saying she was being held against her will and that she feared for her life; officers called the mother to check on the information they received, and she confirmed it was true. Before deputies could arrive at the home, the son had taken his mother, in her 70s, in a vehicle and left the area.
Saline County deputies then started pursuing the wanted vehicle about 1:15 near Chicot Road and Mablevale Cutoff Road, right at the Saline County line and continued into downtown Little Rock. Pennington said the chase went along I-30 and I-40, with speeds reaching 90 miles-per-hour. The pursuit caused an accident along Woodrow Street in Little Rock, but there were no injuries as a result of it.
Sadler said the chase ended when Johnston hit three patrol cars, two from the Saline County Sheriff's Department and one Little Rock Police Department at 7th Street and Johnson Street in Little Rock. There were no injuries reported in the incident.
Pennington said Johnston is being charged with multiple felonies including kidnapping and fleeing. It was learned after the arrest that there was also a pick-up order for Johnston for leaving a hospital without completing a drug rehab program, according to Pennington. He was taken into Saline County custody.
