Downtown water main break causes traffic delays

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Central Arkansas Water crews are currently repairing a water main break that caused some traffic disruption in downtown Little Rock.

The main break occurred on Louisiana Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Two customers are currently without water service. The utility has crews on site and anticipate completing the repairs late this afternoon. Utility officials stress that the water remains safe for consumption.

Graham W. Rich, P.E., Chief Executive Officer, said that the utility is working as quickly as it can to complete the work. "We are working diligently to complete the repair and restore service to normal for affected customers," he said. "We understand the inconvenience."

At approximately 7:30 a.m. today, Central Arkansas Water received a report of the break. Crews isolated the damaged segment of the water main by 8:30 a.m. and immediately began repairs. The cause of the water line failure is undetermined at this time.

Customers in the area could see discolored water as a result of the main break scouring manganese from the lining of the water mains. Manganese is a natural element in the water which gets deposited on the walls of mains. Its presence does not adversely affect the safety of the water for human consumption. If the water is discolored, the utility does advise customers not to wash clothing in the discolored water because it can stain fabrics. Customers should wait until the discoloration clears before washing clothing.

Customers with questions may contact the CAW Distribution Dispatch Center day or night at (501) 377-1239. The water utility has personnel available to answer customer inquiries.
