LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – Patricia Downes has entered a My Town Hero nomination for her late mother, Maria Harris.

Downes said her mother immigrated to the US from Dusseldorf, Germany, after surviving World War II. She married Downes’ father, who happened to be an American soldier; she met him while working on the American Military Base in the Base Exchange.

Because of her father’s profession as a soldier, Downes’ mother was left to care for her children in foreign country on her own on several occasions and for lengthy periods of time.

“We never had a lot of money, but she made sure we were well fed and clothed,” said Downes. “She struggled with health issues, but you never knew how much pain she was in. I hope that I can age as gracefully as she did.”

Oncethe family moved to the Ozarks, Harris apparently fell in love because they reminded her of her home that she had to leave behind.
