Friday is 'Jazz for Peace' Day at Dreamland Ballroom

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Mayor Stodolla has proclaimed Friday, May 20, Jazz for Peace at Dreamland Ballroom Day and at 6 pm. Singer / Pianist / Composer Rick DellaRatta, considered by many to be one of the finest Jazz Artists performing today, will perform a special Benefit Concert for Friends of Dreamland Ballroom at the Dreamland Ballroom located at 800 West Ninth Street in Little Rock, AR. Opening this show will be the Little Rock Central High School Jazz Band under the direction of Brice Evans.  Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 day of event.

This property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior, Arkansas Historic Preservation Society. The FlagandBanner.com headquarters and storefront resides in the same building as the historic Taborian Hall and the Dreamland Ballroom that once showcased legendary musicians of the 1930’s, ‘40’s and ‘50’s such as Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Louis Armstrong, and many more.  This popular dancehall was a hotbed for big bands, jazz and blues and more.  Dreamland ripped and rollicked with many legendary musical artists.  For more information please visit www.dreamlandballroom.org.

Having performed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Paquito D' Rivera, Rick DellaRatta is now considered by many to be one of the finest Singer/Pianists performing today and one of only a handful of Jazz Artists who can make a successful musical presentation to a large audience without having to abandon the true art form of Jazz. His unique and original piano playing and composing has been compared in print to Chick Corea, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner and Thelonius Monk while his signature vocal sound and style has been likened to Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Michael Franks and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Recently, Rick DellaRatta was included in the Book “Jazz Singers” as one of the top Jazz Vocalists of all time and by The Foundation Center in their list of the top musician philanthropists of our time along with Bono (U2), Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Sting.

This event would not be possible without our generous sponsors; Arkansas Baptist College, Arkansas Flag and Banner, Advanced Aesthetics, Black History Commission of Arkansas, Department of Arkansas Heritage, King Blvd Catering, Mosaic Templar’s Cultural Center, Oxford American Magazine, Philander Smith College, Pulaski County Historical Society, and Quapaw Quarter Association.
