Little Rock Family: Tips for fighting childhood obesity

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Childhood obesity has increased dramatically in recent decades.

Besides the social stigma, obesity also leads to a variety of health problems, so parents should be aware of the long term negative consequences.

Little Rock Family editor Heather Bennett was here on Monday to share some tips for parents to keep their kids' health from taking hits:

1. Take stock of family behavior patterns and family history. You know if you have high cholesterol and heart disease, things like that.

2. Consult with health care providers on behavior modification, things to try at home to try things differently.

3. Know the difference in helpful cholesterol and not helpful. There's HDL which you can think is helpful, and LDL which is lowsy. This is the cholesterol that leads to heart disease, it can clog the arteries and things like that. High cholesterol and heart disease.

4. If those behavioral changes don't help, then you need to work with your healthcare provider on Medications and further testing to see if there's something else that can further help your child and help your family.
