Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series speakers announced for Old State House

 The Old State House Museum announces the schedule of its upcoming Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series slated through the end of March. Brown Bag Lectures are a great way for participants to gain an understanding of special Arkansas history topics. The lectures take place during the lunch hour, from noon to 1:00 p.m., making them a convenient way to learn. Admission to each program is free. Participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch; beverages are provided. Canvascommunity to hold Christmas dinner for those in need

Canvascommunity, part of United Methodist Church, is hosting a dinner for those in need on Christmas day from 4 – 7 p.m.

In addition to providing dinner, canvas is accepting donations of blankets, coats, hats and gloves and will be distributing those at the meal as well. The dinner complements the group’s “brown bag” program, which distributes food and toiletry items year-round.  

Food is being provided by Morris Medical Company, Buffalo Grill, and members of Canvascommunity. Canvascommunity is located at 1111 W. 7th Street in downtown Little Rock.

Mayor's Youth Council to receive grant

On Monday, December 20 at 11:00 a.m. in the City Hall Rotunda, a representative from the State Farm Insurance Agency will give the Mayor’s Youth Council a check for $2,500. This money will help the members of the Mayor’s Youth Council visit one of Little Rock’s Sister Cities to learn more about other cultures and how they can develop new ideas to improve their community.

Students in the Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council participate in various monthly volunteer and community service projects throughout the city. In 2010, approximately 150 students have volunteered at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Arkansas Arts Center, Wildwood Park for the Arts, Our House Shelter and many other volunteer activities.

Join us for the annual Little Rock Fire Dept. Holiday Parade as LRFD helps Santa deliver toys to the DHS Office at 7th and Main.

Parade line-up starts at 1:30 p.m. and parade starts at 2:00 p.m.

Parade Route: Central Fire Station (7th & Chester) North to Capitol, East to Main and then South to 7th and Main

See the 1931 Ford Fire Truck with Santa and toys, the LRFD engine and ladder truck, LRPD and motorcycles and classic cars.

Home Fire Safety Surveys

The Little Rock Fire Dept. will begin offering Home Fire Safety Surveys beginning Nov. 8, 2010. Home owners can call 918-3705 to request a survey.

Veterans at Fort Roots to receive 125 care packages from UAMS employees

UAMS employees will deliver care packages to veterans being cared for in the Veterans Administration hospital at Fort Roots as part of an ongoing celebration of military veterans Nov. 10 at 10:30 a.m.

UAMS collected the items in honor of the 280 fellow employees who have served or currently serve in the military.

About 125 packages were assembled, each containing toiletries, a pair of underwear, t-shirt, candy, and an entertaiment item such as a book.

Each patient will recieve a "Thank You" card signed by UAMS employees, thanking them for their service and a poster colored by a 3- or 4-year-old enrolled in Woodruff Early Childhood Center.

The packages will be delivered at Building 170 room GH124 at 220 Fort Roots Drive at the Eugene Towbin Veterans Affairs Hospital at Fort Roots in North Little Rock.
