Rock star Corey Smith in LR this Sunday, April 17

Rock star Corey Smith in LR this Sunday, April 17

With seven albums and dozens of sold-out shows now under his belt — including at famed venues such as The Roxy in Atlanta and Georgia Theatre in Athens — Corey Smith brings his popular, unpretentious Americana act with country, rock and blues influences to Revolution Music Room on Sunday, April 17.

Since winning a songwriting contest and releasing his first album, "Undertones," in 2003, Smith has been soaring underneath the radar of the major labels by nursing a loyal fan base all over the South who appreciates his back-to-basics honesty in both his music and his lyrics.

"Drawing heavily from the blues, country and rock traditions of the South, he applies the back-porch twang of an acoustic guitar, a soulful singing voice, and well-crafted lyrics to the task of creating music that is at once distinct and familiar," Jambase.com says.

His supporting band is not bad either; this guy and his friends know how to "Party" — incidentally, one of his most popular

'Cruise for Kids' raises money to fight child hunger

The North Little Rock Mayor's Youth Council has teamed up with the Arkansas Queen and Red Lobster to give you an unforgettable evening on Thursday, May 26th. "Cruise for the Kids" will benefit Arkansas Rice Depot's Food For Kids program, a backpack program that sends food home with kids after school. Sadly, Arkansas is #1 in child hunger. Food For Kids helps more than 30,000 children in Arkansas each year.

Guests will board the Arkansas Queen at 6:30pm. The cruise, dinner and a silent auction begin at 7:00pm.

Pink Floyd tribute band Set the Controls brings 'Great Gig' to LR!

Pink Floyd tribute band Set the Controls brings 'Great Gig' to LR!

Anyone who has ever been brought to the point of weeping from the awesome beauty of a Pink Floyd (or any classic rock) song, must have been watching a live performance of Set the Controls, formerly called Eclipse, a nationally touring and widely respected PInk Floyd tribute band returning to Revolution Music Room this Saturday, April 9.

Set the Controls has five members, including Kathie Hull on backup vocals. This woman can roar, and she absolutely does on "Great Gig in the Sky" off "Dark Side of the Moon" — it's so unbelievably dead-on and so powerful a performance every time, you won't soon forget it, if you ever do.

Afroman performs tonight in Little Rock

Afroman performs tonight in Little Rock

It's hard to believe Afroman's global hit "Because I Got High" is 10 years old, but it is.

It actually was released on Afroman's second album, in 2000, before widely circulating the Internet. Then it was played on "The Howard Stern Show," and the rest is history, as its subsequent use in the films "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "The Perfect Score" and "Disturbia" helped propel the Mississippi-based rapper to stardom. Before long, Afroman was nominated for a Grammy in 2002, and "Because I Got High" won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.

Since then, Afroman has released music mostly through the Internet as an independent, garnering a number of big hits via iTunes and other online music services.
