Dreamland Ballroom to host May 1 Book Signing and Brick Dedication

The Dreamland Ballroom and Taborian Hall, home of Arkansas Flag and Banner, will open its doors to the public on May 1 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm for a Book Signing and Brick Dedication event.

In honor of all who have donated bricks over the past 5 years, Friends of Dreamland Ballroom will welcome The Very Reverend Jonathon Jensen from Trinity Cathedral to bless the bricks that will pave the way to the future building addition and entrance.

The dedication ceremony will coincide with a book signing by Berna J. Love for her new book Temple of Dreams: Dreamland Ballroom and its Taborian Hall, which details the history of the building and its context in “Little Harlem.”  Guests will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with many of the people whose stories are intertwined with the Ballroom over the last century.  The book can be preordered online or by calling 501-255-5700.

The celebration will also include swing dancing with the Little Rock Bop Club; refreshments courtesy of Mark Abernathy, Loca Luna, and the Red Door; tours of the Dreamland Ballroom, and more. Producer Mark Wilcken will be filming the event for “Dreamland,” an AETN documentary.  AETN will also host an Oral History Booth where the community is encouraged to come share their stories and memories of Dreamland and Ninth Street for all future generations to enjoy.

Throughout the evening, there will be a running jazz session (sponsored by the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation/Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame) featuring distinguished Arkansas musicians playing jazz standards popular during Dreamland Ballroom's heyday.  The session will be kicked off by The Ted Ludwig Trio (Ted Ludwig on guitar, Joe Vick on bass, Brian Brown on drums).

The Friends of Dreamland Ballroom welcome the Central Arkansas community to join them for a free, fun-filled evening on May 1.  No RSVP required.
