SBA seeks nominations for Arkansas Small Business Person of the Year,  Small Business Champions

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (SBA) The U.S. Small Business Administration Arkansas District Office is seeking successful and inspiring entrepreneurs to represent Arkansas during SBA’s 2014 Small Business Week.  Nominations are due January 17, 2014.

“This is the time to honor an outstanding entrepreneur in your area.  Small business owners are so important to the strength of our country, and these awards provide an opportunity to celebrate their success,” said Yolanda Garcia Olivarez, SBA Regional Administrator.  Olivarez heads Region VI which serves more than 3.3 million entrepreneurs in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.  “Each day these men and women overcome obstacles with creativity and perseverance, and help create jobs for themselves and others.”

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Heifer International) – Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Yolanda, made landfall last week, bringing wind speeds higher than 230 mph and a storm surge of more than 10 feet. The death toll, currently confirmed at more than 1,000 is expected to rise.

Heifer Philippines Country Director Herc Paradiang reports that all Heifer staff members are reported safe and several are en route to the central region to assess the damage to our five projects in the areas most heavily affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan.

Two CrossFit gyms holding fundraisers for Veterans

LITTLE ROCK/NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Bam Crossfit/CrossFit NLR) – Two locally veteran owned CrossFit gyms or “boxes” are hosting fundraisers to support two charities that support veterans returning back to normal life after military service.

BAM CrossFit will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday November 9th, 2013 for Johnny America Clothing that supports veterans from the battlefield to the box with Johnny America CrossFit scholarships.  Started by Heath Peters in 2013 in Northwest Arkansas after his own journey with transitioning from military life into finding a new purpose with CrossFit and now coaching and giving back to the community.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (HMA) - Hillcrest is celebrating the holidays with their annual Holiday open house.  Saturday November 16th at 10AM will officially kick off the Hillcrest Holiday Season.  The Hillcrest Merchants Association has plans for carolers, Santa and free carriage rides through Hillcrest on Saturday November 16th and Sunday November 17th.  Carriage rides will begin on Saturday November 16th at 1PM till 6PM and Sunday November 17th at 1PM till 5PM.

Nonprofits receive $17,500 through Operation Round-Up

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (First Electric Cooperative) – Nineteen nonprofit organizations received funds recently through First Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round-Up program. Community members on the Operation Round-Up Board of Trustees approved $17,500 in donations.

Recipients by county include:

•In Arkansas County, Arkansas County Single Parent Scholarship Fund and DeWitt Senior Center each received $1,000.

•In Cleburne County, Care Cap Connections/Volunteer America-1776 received $500 and Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Cleburne County, Wilburn Volunteer Fire Department and Drasco Fire Department each received $1,000. 

•In Garland County, Hot Springs Village Walk for Cancer Research received $1,000. 

•In Lonoke County, Arkansas Waterfowl Association received $500 and Lonoke County Museum, Lonoke County Safe Haven and Scott Fire Protection District each received $1,000.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Promenade at Chenal) – Lululemon athletica will be officially rolling out their yoga mats at The Promenade at Chenal during the store Grand Opening event Friday, November 1 – Sunday, November 3.
